The year is 3267, Post-Shift, Re-expansion Era…
Brenorra Warring’s normal, hard-working, God-fearing father is going crazy. That is the only conclusion Bren can come to when a fire destroys their shipping business and his answer is to take a job in the uncivilized Coalition Colonial Region. On the other side of the Atlan Ocean. Far from everything and everyone she has ever known or loved. Out of concern for his well-being, Bren leaves her plans for her own future and goes with him to the colonies. Then, only days into their journey, disaster strikes at sea, and Bren is left with nothing but the clothes on her back, the belongings in her father’s satchel, and the discovery that her father was keeping secrets from her. Secrets that make no sense, and that appear at first to be more proof of her father’s paranoia.
But those secrets have gotten her into trouble. A lot of trouble. With no idea who to trust, Bren is forced into an alliance of necessity with two very different men. The first is a notorious pirate who knows entirely too much about her situation and who keeps turning up at oddly convenient times. The other is a brilliant but icy Coalition Navy war hero who has been branded a wanted man by the same forces hunting for her.
Dragged into a terrifying game of cat and mouse, Bren’s journey takes her through harrowing navy battles and devastating loss, and into a world of human depravity she is unprepared for. Through it all, she is drawn closer to the almighty God her father taught her to love. She must learn to walk by faith and put her trust in God alone – for the battle belongs to Him, and He is her only hope in life or death.
In this spellbinding debut, Pennymaker blends the best of several genres, weaving a touch of retro futuristic steampunk flair through a wide-ranging political thriller, with edge-of-your-seat action, richly imagined settings, and deftly portrayed characters.
NOTE: This is the completely rewritten, reworked, and re-edited version of a secular series by the same author.
